How do I Measure Grams With MLS?

Convert weight in grams to a volume measured in milliliters.

If you want to figure out the volume of a substance, you can determine it using the weight measurement and the density of the substance. In the metric system, the gram (g) is the base unit for weight measurement. Volume is regularly measured in liters. Milliliters (mL) are equal to 1/1,000 of a liter. Density is simply the ratio of mass to volume, but varies from different types of substance. Therefore, you can use density to determine a substance's volume measurement.

Instructions

1. Determine the amount in grams you want to measure in milliliters (mL). The conversion will tell you the volume of a substance with a particular weight.

2. Look at a density chart for a number of liquid substances (see Resources).

3. Find the substance that you want to measure. The density will most often be listed in grams/cubic centimeter (which is equal to g/mL) or kilograms/cubic meter. To determine the density in g/cc, divide the kg/cu.m value by 1,000. One of the most common densities is of pure water, which is equal to 1 g/mL.

4. Divide the number of grams you determined in Step 1 by the density value in g/mL. The result will give you the volume of the particular substance you are interested in. Write down the resulting figure in units of mL.
