GIMP is a widely used freeware graphics program offered as an alternative to commercial products like Photoshop or PaintShop Photo Pro. GIMP has an array of tools, functions and features to allow the graphics artist to perform almost any task he might face. One job that graphics artist are frequently given is to create collages based on parts taken from multiple images. To do this, they have to use the tools in GIMP to create cutouts from each image that they can then assemble into a single document.

Instructions

      Load the images that you want to make cutouts from onto your computer, either by transferring them from a camera, CD or other digital medium or by scanning them in from print copies.

      Open GIMP. Select "File" and click "Open." In the dialog that appears, locate the first image that you want to work with and open it.

      Select the "Path" tool from the toolbar and use it to click around that section of the image that you want to cut out. Drag as you place each point to refine the lines between them.

      In the tool options below the toolbar, click on the "Selection From Path." Then select "Edit" and choose "Copy."

      Select "File" from the menu and choose "New." In the dialog that appears, enter the width and height you want for your collage and click "OK."

      Select "Edit" from the menu and choose "Paste." Use the "Scale" and "Move" tools to get the cutout where you want it. Repeat this process for all them images you want to do cutouts from. Save your work.
