Instructions
-
Curling Iron
-
1
Choose a curling iron with a small-to-medium sized barrel, depending upon how large you want the curls to be.
-
2
Use a comb to create a section of hair that is 1 to 2 inches in width. Open the curling iron wand and clamp it down on the section of hair near the roots.
-
-
3
Slide the curling iron down the length of the hair section. Stop when you are nearly at the bottom of the hair.
-
4
Wind the hair up in the curling iron until you are at the top of the head. Then turn the curling iron so that it is vertical (straight up and down), with the tip of the curling iron pointing towards the ceiling and bottom of the curling iron pointing towards the floor.
-
5
Hold the curling iron in the hair for approximately 5 seconds and then slowly unroll the curling iron from the hair. Let the curl bounce free from the curling iron but do not touch with your fingers.
-
6
Repeat with sections around the entire head. Allow all of the curls to cool and then gently tousle with fingers. Do not loosen the curls too much or comb through with your fingers or a comb, as this will result in waves and not ringlet curls.
-
7
Spray lightly with hairspray if desired.
-
8
Try the same directions for Steps 2 through 7 with individual hot rollers, which can be purchased at many beauty supply stores or home retail stores.
Sponge Rollers
-
9
Follow the directions for the steps in the Curling Iron section; however, use individual sponge rollers instead of a curling iron for each hair section. Hair should be damp for the best result with sponge rollers. Sponge rollers can be purchased at most grocery stores, drugstores or beauty supply stores.
-
10
Sleep on the rollers overnight and remove them in the morning.
-
11
Lightly finger comb the curls and spray with hairspray if desired.
Rag Curls
-
12
Cut clean cotton fabric, such as an old T-shirt, into strips that are a few inches longer than your hair and an inch or so in width.
-
13
Moisten hair with water from a spray bottle or leave damp after a shower. Rag curls are best done at night before bed.
-
14
Create sections of hair that are 1 to 2 inches wide. Take one fabric strip and tie it into a knot around the top part of a section, near the roots.
-
15
Wrap the rest of the hair section around the knotted fabric. Tie the two ends of the fabric strip when all of the hair has been wound around the knot.
-
16
Continue around the rest of the hair. Sleep on the knots overnight. Slowly take out the fabric strips in the morning and gently loosen the curls with your fingers. Spray with hairspray if desired.
