How to Recover Virus-Infected & Deleted Files

Recovering a virus-infected file is a process that could either be easy or tough. It just depends on the type of virus that has entered your computer. Low-risk viruses can be removed manually by deleting certain files and tweaking your system registry. However, the same doesn't apply to high-risk viruses. The easiest and most effective way to recover a virus infected file (without deleting it) is by using a dependable anti-virus program and running a complete scan of your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the Start button. Right-click "My Computer" (Windows XP) or "Computer" (Windows Vista and Windows 7). Select "Properties."

    • 2

Click the tab "Performance" and select "File System." Click "Troubleshooting" and select "Disable System Restore." If you are using Windows Vista, click the link "System Protection" on the left pane. Click to remove the check mark next to your system drive (typically C:\ drive) and select "Turn System Restore Off." If you are using Windows 7, click the button that says "Configure" below the list of drives. Click to select "Turn off system protection" under the sub-heading "Restore Settings." Disabling System Restore prevents the computer calling up an earlier version of the infected file.

Launch your anti-virus program from the Start menu. Run a complete scan of your computer. If you do not have an anti-virus program installed on your computer, install one immediately. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0, Norton AntiVirus 2010 and Avira AntiVir Personal are available for free download. (See Resources to learn more and download links.)

Follow the on-screen prompts to remove the viruses off your computer. If your anti-virus program gives you an option to "Repair" an infected file, do so immediately after the scan.

Tips & Warnings

  • Run a complete scan of your computer with an anti-virus program at least two to three times a week to prevent further virus infections.
