Bartenders rim cocktail glasses with a layer of salt, sugar or another powdered flavor to enhance the drink. The salt or sugar should not go into the drink itself and needs to stay on the outer rim of the glass. Instructions

    • 1

Dampen the outer rim of the glass. If you have a lemon or lime for the drink, place the juicy part on the rim of the glass. Slide the fruit around the rim to moisten it. If you use water or liquor, pour a small amount into a saucer, turn the glass upside down, and gently dip it into the liquid.

    • 2

Place the powder of your choosing into a shallow bowl. Sugar or salt are most commonly used. Hold the glass sideways and tilt the damp outer edge into the bowl. Slowly rotate the glass so the edge collects the powder from the bowl.

    • 3

Shake the glass gently once the rim is covered to knock off any excess material.
