How to Avoid the Proxy Server

How to Avoid the Proxy Server thumbnail
Congfigure your web browser to avoid going through a proxy server.

If you don't want to use a proxy server to connect to the Internet, you have to reconfigure your web browser's connection setting options. The process of accessing your browser's connection setting options and reconfiguring them to avoid connecting to a proxy server varies slightly depending upon the type of web browser you're using. Once your web browser is reconfigured it will connect to the Internet by connecting directly to the appropriate Internet server for a particular web address rather than passing your request onto a proxy server, which would then establish a connection with the appropriate Internet server.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet Explorer 7 / 8
  • OR
  • Firefox 3.5 / 3.6
  • Google Chrome
  • Safari

Select "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu, go to the "Connections" tab, and click the "LAN settings" button in the "Local Area Network..." section. (FOR INTERNET EXPLORER.)

Select "Options" from the "Tools" menu, go to the "Advanced" options, and click the "Settings" button in the "Connections" section. (FOR FIREFOX.)

Select "Options" from the Tools menu (the Tools menu is represented by the little wrench icon), go to the "Under the Hood" tab, click the "Change proxy settings" button, then click the "LAN settings" button. (FOR GOOGLE CHROME.)

Select "Preferences" from the "Safari" or "Edit" menu, go to the "Advanced" options, and click the "Change Settings" button. (FOR SAFARI.)

Configure the browser to not use a proxy server.

Delete the IP address entered in the "Address" box, clear the "Port" box, and remove the check mark from the box next to "Use proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections)." (FOR INTERNET EXPLORER and GOOGLE CHROME.)

Clear any addresses listed in the "Proxy" field boxes, clear any entry listed in the "Port" field boxes, and click the "No proxy" radio button. (FOR FIREFOX.)

Highlight each selected proxy server protocol in order to erase the address and port number for that server, then remove the check mark from its "Select a proxy server to configure" box. (FOR SAFARI.)

    • 4

Apply your new connection settings. Click "OK" or "Apply Now" at the bottom of the connection settings dialog box.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot access the connections setting options for Internet Explorer because they are grayed out, there may be a group policy setting on your computer that has disabled access to your internet connections settings. Only computer administrators can reset group policy settings.
