How to Back Up Portable Hard Drives

Portable hard drives are hard drives in small enclosures that plug into your computer through a USB or FireWire cable. These drives are typically smaller in size than normal internal computer hard drives, so if you want to back up your portable hard drive, the easiest way is to make a copy of the drive contents onto your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your portable hard drive into your computer.

    • 2

Open Windows Explorer (double-click on "My Computer" on the desktop) and navigate to the place on your computer where you want to store the backup of the portable drive.

    • 3

Right-click, click "New" and click "Folder." Name the folder something like "Portable hard drive backup" and press "Enter."

    • 4

Navigate to the portable hard drive in Windows Explorer, select all of the files and folders on the drive and press the "CTRL" and "C" keys together.

    • 5

Go back to the folder you created and press "CTRL" and "V" together. The files from the portable hard drive will be copied into the folder, creating a backup of the contents of the drive.
