1
Prepare pressure-treated wood for staining by weathering it for six months. Test the wood for any remaining manufacturer's coating, by adding a few drops of water to the wood. Check to see if water beads up on the wood.
-
2
Proceed if the water penetrates the wood. Add four ounces of trisodium phosphate, three quarts of water and one quart of bleach to the garden pump. Apply the washing solution to the deck.

Agitate the solution on the deck with a push broom to remove dead layers of wood, mildew and dirt. Sand the new wood deck in the direction of the wood grain with 50- to 80-grit sandpaper. Use a leaf blower, broom or wet-dry vacuum to remove excess sanding dust..
-
4
Rinse the sanded deck with the pressure washer 8 to 12 inches from the deck surface. Wait 24 hours after cleaning the new wood deck before applying stain.
-
5
Search for weather conditions that will remain dry and warmer than 41 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 24 hours, before beginning the process of staining. Stir stain repeatedly for consistent dispersing of the pigmentation.
-
6
Follow all directions on each can of stain. Apply the stain using a clean or new natural-bristle brush. Remove excess stain puddles by using the back-brushing technique when applying the stain with a roller.
