How to Repair the CMOS Battery in a Motherboard

Occasionally, you may find that your computer is not keeping the correct time or date settings. You may also receive an error message that says "CMOS battery failure" or "CMOS read error." This can be a result of the CMOS battery wearing out and needing to be repaired. The easiest and most cost efficient way to repair the battery is to simply replace the part, which can typically be done without needing a computer technician.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the electrical cord of the computer from the power supply before replacing the CMOS battery in the motherboard. Unfasten the screws on the back of the computer case that are holding the cover onto the case.

    • 2

Slide the cover off the computer case and set the cover out of the way. Locate the round, silver CMOS battery next to the Central Processing Unit (CPU) on the motherboard that has the voltage amount and serial number printed on the back of the battery.

    • 3

Remove the CMOS battery carefully by unfastening the retaining clip with a screwdriver and pulling the battery straight up by hand. Take the battery out of the computer case.

    • 4

Attach a new CMOS battery to the motherboard and slide the retaining clip back over the battery. Slide the cover back over the computer case, securing it with screws in the back.

    • 5

Plug the power cord of the computer into the electrical outlet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always unplug the power cord of the computer before repairing the CMOS battery in the motherboard.

  • Before using a screwdriver or other metal device on any electronic parts, ground the equipment by touching it to any metal away from the computer.
