How to Unzip a Tar.gz

Extracting archive files expands their contents. While Microsoft Windows can extract, or unzip (as the process is known with .zip archives) ZIP archives, it cannot extract TAR archives. TAR archives, first developed for Unix operating systems, are uncompressed archive files, whereas TAR archives with the .gz suffix have been compressed. With Windows operating systems, you will need dedicated file archival software to extract them.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install 7-Zip (see Resources). Locate the .tar.gz file on your hard drive, then right-click it. Click "7-Zip," then "Extract To ..." to extract the content to a folder alongside the original file. 7-Zip is freeware and supports almost any type of file archive.

    • 2

Download and install WinRar (see Resources). Locate your .tar.gz file, and double-click it. Click "Extract To," then designate a folder for the extracted files to be stored. Click "Extract." WinRar is predominantly associated with RAR archives, though it can access many other types. WinRar is a shareware application.

Download and install WinZip (see Resources). Locate your .tar.gz file, right-click it, and click "Extract Here" to extract the content to an adjacent folder. WinZip, like WinRar, is shareware and is typically associated with ZIP archives (that Windows now natively supports).
