How do I Replace a 1992 Buick Roadmaster Serpentine Belt?

The 1992 Buick Roadmaster has a single serpentine belt that operates the engine accessories. These accessories include the air conditioner, power steering, water pump and the alternator. The belt is routed around each accessory pulley in a method that is outlined by the serpentine belt routing diagram. As the belt turns around each pulley, it enables each accessory to perform. If the belt is cut, chaffed or has excessive cracking in any area of the belt, replace it immediately before the belt breaks. Once the belt breaks, all the accessories will stop working.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood on the 1992 Buick Roadmaster and secure it in place. Inspect the top of the fan cover and locate the serpentine belt routing diagram. The diagram holds the routing directions for the new belt.

    • 2

Inspect the front of the engine and locate the automatic belt tensioner. The tensioner on the Roadmaster models is on the left hand side of the engine. The tensioner has a roller pulley on one end and a spring tensioned arm on the other end. Use the bolt head in the middle of the roller pulley to turn the tensioner.

    • 3

Turn the roller pulley counter clockwise with the breaker bar and a metric socket. The tensioner will then move counterclockwise and relieve the tension from the belt. While holding the tensioner over with the breaker bar, reach down with the other hand and remove the belt from around the roller pulley. Then, release the tensioner.

    • 4

Slide the belt out from around all of the accessory pulleys. Then pull the belt out of the engine bay.

    • 5

Route the new belt around each pulley by following the routing instructions on the serpentine belt routing diagram. Then, inspect the new belt to make sure it is properly routed and completely seated inside of each pulley.

    • 6

Turn the tensioner device counterclockwise and position the new belt around the roller pulley. Release the tensioner and it will pull all of the slack out of the new belt. Remove the breaker bar and socket from the engine bay.

    • 7

Crank the 1992 Buick Roadmaster and inspect the belt as it turns around each accessory pulley. Make sure the belt stays centered and seated within the pulleys. Then, turn the engine off and close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the routing diagram can't be located on the fan cover, use a pen and a notepad to draw the routing diagram of the old belt before removing it from the pulleys.

  • Keep hands and tools away from the moving parts on the front of the engine while it is running.
