How to Add a Top Fan Computer Case Mod
Cutting a hole in your computer case and adding an extra fan to it may not seem very beneficial, but in actuality, it will improve airflow and even give your case a new edge in design. This task may seem daunting but can be performed with just the use of a rotary tool and a couple of accessories.
Things You'll Need
- Rotary tool
- Fiberglass-reinforced cutting wheel
- Drill bit
- Case fan
- Mounting screws
- Screwdriver
- Non-permanent marker
- Rounded hand file
Instructions
-
-
1
Position the case fan on top of the case where you want to cut a hole for it.
-
2
Mark the four screw holes of the fan on the case with the marker. Also, mark the circular contour of the inner fan (where the blades are) on the case. You should now have a big circle with four small circles at each of its corners drawn on the top of the case.

-
3
Attach the drill bit to the rotary tool and power it on.
-
4
Drill four small holes for the screws where you marked them on the case.
-
5
Power down the rotary tool, detach the drill bit, and attach the reinforced cutting wheel.
-
6
Power on the rotary tool and use it to cut the large circular hole that you drew on the case earlier. When cutting circles with the rotary tool, hold it so the cutting wheel is at a 45 degree angle in relation to the case. This will create a round cut instead of a straight cut. Take your time and do not apply too much pressure while cutting; let the rotary tool's speed do the work.
-
7
Scrape the edges of the newly cut hole with the rounded hand file to even them out.
-
8
Position, and hold, the case fan in place under the hole and use the screwdriver to tightly screw in the fan's mounting screws.
