How do I Enable Power Over Ethernet on a Cisco 3560?

Enable PoE on a Cisco 3560

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is a wonderful feature in many network switches that provides power and network connectivity to PoE enabled devices over a single network connection cable. In some cases, PoE will need to be configured on a Cisco 3560 when plugging in a PoE enabled device in order to use this feature.

Things You'll Need

• Cisco serial console cable
• Computer with terminal console program installed

Instructions

1. Plug a Cisco serial console cable into the 9-pin serial port on the back of a computer and the other end of the serial cable into the serial console port on the Cisco 3560.

2. Open the terminal console program---for example Hyperterminal or Putty in Microsoft Windows or Minicom in Linux---and configure the terminal console program to connect at 9600 baud, or "bits per second," with flow control configured for "None."

3. Press the "Enter" key several times and the Cisco command prompt will display. Type "enable" and press the "Enter" key, then type the enable password if requested and press the "Enter" key.

4. Type "config t" and press the "Enter" key to access global configuration mode.

5. Type "interface fastethernet 0/2," replacing "fastethernet 0/2" with the name of a PoE port you wish to enable, and press the "Enter" key. Type "power inline auto" on the command line, and press the "Enter" key. Repeat for each PoE port you wish to enable.

6. Type "exit" and press the "Enter" key when all PoE ports have been enabled, then type "exit" and press the "Enter" key. Type "copy run start," and press the "Enter" key to save the new configuration settings.
