How to Dial Overseas Fax Numbers

While email may appear to be the communication method of choice in the international business world, some overseas outlets prefer faxes for security reasons. Regardless of how often you send an international fax, familiarizing yourself with the process is essential if you have personal or business contacts overseas.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain the country code of the person or organization to whom you are sending a fax. In most cases, your contact will provide you with a fax number that includes the country code.

    • 2

Log onto the Country Codes website (see Resources) if you are unclear about the number your contact has provided. If you only send faxes to a few countries, familiarize yourself with these country codes.

    • 3

Dial 011, which is the North American international access number. For some business fax machines, you may have to dial "9" before entering the international access code to reach an outside line.

    • 4

Dial the country code and then the fax number. The number will include the city code and the phone number. International numbers are not typically seven digits long, so make sure to double check the number before you enter it.

    • 5

Press the "Send" key to scan the document through the fax machine.

    • 6

Remain by the fax machine to confirm that the fax was successful. Most fax machines print out a status report after attempting to send a document. If you are uncertain, call or email your contact to confirm receipt of the fax.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact your phone provider for international dialing rates. Overseas faxes are subject to international calling rates.
