mIRC is the name of one of the best known client programs for Internet Relay Chat (IRC). With IRC, you can chat in real time and trade files with other people who are connected to the same IRC network as you. Occasionally, you may encounter situations when using mIRC in which you need to obtain a person's IP address. This may be because you need to unblock the IP address in your firewall software so that they can send you a file, or because you need to ban them for poor behavior while you are running an IRC chat room. There are multiple commands that you can use in mIRC to find a person's IP address.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that you are connected to the same IRC server as the person whose IP address you want to find, and that you know that person's "nick," or the handle that they use on the IRC server.

    • 2

Bring any mIRC window to the foreground by clicking it. The "Status" window often works best, as there tends to be less scrolling text than in a chat room. Click in the box at the bottom of the window. You should now see a blinking cursor.

    • 3

Type "/DNS (nick)" and press "Enter," there "(nick)" is the person's IRC handle. For example, if the person's nick is "MyFriend," you would type "/DNS MyFriend" and press "Enter." You should now see two purple lines of text. The second line begins with "DNS resolved" and ends with the person's IP address, which is a set of four numbers separated by dots. An example IP address might be "66.84.1.100." You may in rare cases receive an error message when using the /DNS command. This may occur if the server you are connected to does not support the command. If this is the case, continue to the next step.

Type "/userip (nick)" and press "Enter." You should see a single line of output in black text with the person's IRC handle, and equals sign and their IP address. Note that in some cases, the /userip and /DNS commands may give different IP addresses as results. If this is the case, use the IP address that results when you use the /userip command.
