How to Reduce Condensation in Garages

Condensation occurs when warmer, moist air comes in contact with a surface, such as a window or a concrete floor, that has a lower temperature. The moisture builds up, such as when dew forms on the grass in the early hours of the day. If left unattended, a condensation issue can be an ideal setting for mold formation. Preventing condensation in a garage is possible to ensure that its contents do not become susceptible to water damage or mold propagation.

Things You'll Need

• Dehumidifier
• Space heater
• Roof vents
• Insulation

Instructions

1. Place a dehumidifier in the garage to draw in the moist air lingering in the structure. The liquid collects in a basin that can be removed and emptied. The correct size of the dehumidifier depends on the square footage of the garage.

2. Place a space heater in the garage. Turn the heater on during the times of the year when condensation is an issue, such as rainy periods or springtime.

3. Keep a window in the garage open during periods of heavy condensation. This helps promote air flow throughout the garage, which will lessen the amount of condensation.

4. Install passive vents in the garage roof. These vents allow airflow in the space when it is not being used, lessening condensation.

5. Install insulation. This will keep the walls of the garage warmer, which will cut down on the formation of condensation.
