Instructions

  1. Head

    • 1

Make a chain of three stitches with the E or F crochet hook and brown yarn. Join to create a circular shape.

Make six single crochets inside the circle for row one. This project is crocheted in rounds. Fasten a stitch marker or piece of scrap yarn to the last crochet stitch to mark the beginning of the next row.

    • 2

Add two crochets to each single crochet stitch around the circle for row two for a total of 12 stitches. Remove the stitch marker.

    • 3

Attach the row marker. Make one crochet in the next single crochet. Make two single crochets in the next single crochet. Repeat the one single crochet stitch and two single crochet stitch in the single crochet stitches around the circle to complete row three. Remove the stitch marker. Remember to replace it at the beginning of each row from now on.

    • 4

Start row four by making one single crochet in the first three single crochet stitches. Make two single crochets in the next single crochet. Continue the rest of the row with one single crochet in three single crochets and two single crochets in the next single crochet around. Make one single crochet in the next four single crochets and two single crochets in the next single crochet around the perimeter for row five and six single crochets and two single crochets in row six.

    • 5

Make rows seven to 17 by single crocheting in each stitch around. Remember to use the stitch marker at the beginning of each row.

    • 6

Place the crocheted Sackboy head on a flat surface. Count four stitches from the side of the head in toward the center of the face. Secure a stitch marker in the fourth stitch. Count to the fourth stitch on the opposite side of the head and secure a stitch marker in the fourth stitch. This will be the width of the mouth.

    • 7

Make single crochets in the round until reaching the first stitch marker in row 18. Remove the marker. Slip stitch in each single crochet across the width of the mouth until the second marker is reached. Remove the marker and make a slip stitch in that single crochet. Single crochet in each stitch around the head until reaching the first slip stitch of row 19. Make a chain of stitches across the front of the mouth until reaching the first single crochet of the corner of the opposite side of the mouth. Single crochet in each single crochet around.

    • 8

Make single crochets in each single crochet of row 20 until reaching the chain. Single crochet in each chain stitch and on to the single crochet at the corner of the mouth. An open gap should appear between row 19 and 20 for a mouth.

    • 9

Make one single crochet in each of the next two single crochets. Decrease by crocheting the next two single crochets together with one single crochet. Continue making one single crochet in the next two single crochets and one single decreasing crochet in the next two stitches around the head for row 21. Continue decreasing stitches in row 22 to 24. Slip stitch at the end of the 24th row and tie off the yarn, leaving a 4-inch tail.

    • 10

Turn the head inside out. Cut a 3-inch wide circle from black felt. Pin the felt to the circular shape of the mouth on the inside of the head. Sew the mouth inside of the head with black thread. Sew two or three stitches at the back of the mouth to keep the felt from pushing out of the front of the mouth opening. Turn the head right side out and sew the eye buttons to the face with yarn and the crewel embroidery needle with the large eye. Lightly stuff the Sackboy head.

    Torso and Appendages

    • 11

Tie the 4-inch tail of yarn to the end of the skein yarn to re-attach them together. Make two single crochets in each single crochet around the neck area of the Sackboy character for row 25. Single crochet in each single crochet for row 26. Stop at the marker and make two single crochets in each single crochet in the opposite direction for row 27. This is no longer crocheting in the round. You are now making a rectangular shape for the torso.

    • 12

Make single crochet stitches in each stitch back and forth across the rectangular shape for rows 28 through 43. Hold the zipper against the torso and mark it to match the length to the crocheted row 38 and cut away the excess. Pin the zipper to the sides of the rectangular shape and sew it in with brown thread. Sew the bottom of the torso closed with the yarn or crochet it together with slip stitches.

    • 13

Make a ring of three chains and slip stitch together to form a ring. Make six single crochets in the ring for row one. Make two single crochets in each crochet around for a total of 12 stitches in row two. Remember to use the stitch marker for each row. Make a single crochet in each single crochet around for 12 stitches in row three through row 14. Slip stitch to secure the yarn and cut an 8-inch tail of yarn. Make three more of these tubular shapes for a total of two arms and two legs.

    • 14

Stuff the arms and legs lightly with fiberfill. Stitch each arm and leg to the torso.

    • 15

Cut a 10-inch piece of silver embroidery floss. Separate the six strands in half or two sets of three pieces. Thread three strands of the silver embroidery thread into the large eye needle. Refer to a photo of the PS3 Sackboy character and make overcast stitches in the top of the head, along the side of the arms and at each wrist of the crocheted toy.

Tips & Warnings

  • A larger Sackboy can be made with a G, H or I crochet hook. Make a liner from brown nylon or cotton cloth or the stuffing will show through the gaps in the stitches.
