How to Reformat the Storage Card on a WM5 Pocket PC

How to Reformat the Storage Card on a WM5 Pocket PC thumbnail
Windows Mobile is a popular operating system for mobile devices.

Windows Mobile 5 is an operating system for PDAs (portable digital assistants) that is based on the full Windows operating system made by Microsoft. It came with portable versions of many popular Microsoft programs, such as Internet Explorer and Media Player, and a portable version of Microsoft Office was released for it as well. PDAs as a rule of thumb didn't (and still don't) contain a great deal of internal memory, so it's plausible for them to have memory card expansions, but if your memory card messes up, you may need to format it, and there are several different ways to do this.

Things You'll Need

  • PDA with WM5
  • Memory card formatting program

Instructions

  1. Formatting with Flash Format

    • 1

Download and install Flash Format to your pocket PC (see Resources).

    • 2

Tap on "Flash Format" once to launch it. Wait for it to load and when it does, tap the "Format" tab.

    • 3

Select your file system from the drop-down menu and click on the "Format" button. A warning will appear asking you if you are sure you want to format the memory card. Click on "Yes" and it will format your memory card for you.

    Format with Storage Tools

    • 4

Download and install Storage Tools on your WM5 device (see Resources).

    • 5

Launch the "Storage Tools" application by tapping on it once.

    • 6

Select your file system, and tap the "Format" button. Click on "Yes" when you are presented with a warning asking you if you want to format your memory card. Your memory card will then be formatted.

    Format with Card Export II

    • 7

Download and install Card Export II to your Pocket PC (see Resources).

    • 8

Plug your WM5 device into your Windows computer with your USB cable.

    • 9

Tab on the "Card Export II" application and it will launch. Your memory card will then be assessable via the computer as a "Removable Disk."

    • 10

Exit out of any auto-play options that appear and click on "Start" and "My Computer." Right-click your memory card and select "Format."

    • 11

Check mark the box next to the words "Quick Format," and then click the "Start" button. Windows will now format your memory card in your WM5 device.
