How to Set Up Home Network Security
Network security refers to the set of programs and devices put in place between a network computer and the Internet in order to prevent unauthorized access to the network and the spread of viruses and malware. Common aspects of network security include the installation and maintenance of firewalls and anti-virus/anti-malware programs, the proper configuration of wireless security, and ensuring that programs that access the Internet (Web browsers, FTP programs, VPN programs, etc.) are updated to prevent security holes.

1
Consult the system administrator at your place of employment if you are running a VPN (Virtual Private Network) from your home. When using an Internet connection to access the network at your workplace, ensure that you are using software that has been updated properly and that you are using a secured connection.
-
2
Download and install anti-virus software to protect your computer from being infected with malicious Trojans, worms and viruses. Keep your anti-virus software updated, as well as your virus definitions database.

3
Download and install anti-malware software on your computer to prevent infection by malware. Malware can be divided into two main types: spyware (programs that collect information about your computer usage) and adware (programs that display advertisements and pop-ups on your computer without consent). Either type of malware can hijack your computer and prevent access to certain websites and parts of your operating system. Update your anti-malware software regularly.

4
Install and update a network firewall. A firewall prevents unauthorized access to your computer by monitoring incoming and outgoing traffic from your computer's network ports. Firewalls can be hardware devices that are installed between your network and router, or they can be software programs that are installed on each network computer. Microsoft Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 come with a built-in firewall that may be configured in the Windows Security Center window. There is also a range of freeware firewall programs available for download on the Internet.

Enable wireless network security on your wireless router to safeguard against unauthorized network access via wireless network devices. Change the password to access your wireless router by accessing your router's interface through a Web browser. Consult your wireless router's user guide to find the default login and IP address for your router, then type the router's IP address into the address bar in your Web browser. Log in using the default login information, then change the default login password. Rename your wireless network and then disable broadcasting of your network SSID. Enable the WPA or WEP encryption for your wireless network. A network key will be created, or you can specify a network security password. Configure your wireless network devices (smartphones, laptops, etc.) with the new network key to allow them access to the network.
