How do I Get Personal Income Tax Information for 1969?

How do I Get Personal Income Tax Information for 1969? thumbnail
The U.S. Treasury maintains a database of tax information.

A person may need access to tax information from prior years. The United States Treasury maintains a database of information on taxpayers, who can request a copy of their own information for free. The database includes personal income tax records for the year 1969. If you need personal income tax information for another person, additional steps must be taken. For example, executors or administrators of estates are likely to need extensive tax information and may request it on behalf of the estate of a deceased person. In either case, the process is simple.

  • Name of the taxpayer
  • Social Security number or tax identification number of the taxpayer

Instructions

  1. Gather information

    • 1

Gather necessary information before approaching the IRS. At a minimum, you will need the full name, Social Security number or tax identification number, last known address and date of birth for yourself or the person. You will also need to know if the tax return was a joint filing with a spouse. If the person is deceased, additional information will be necessary, such the name of the executor, the date the probate court opened the probate case, court name, location and probate docket number. Failure to include the necessary information will result in rejection of the request for lack of information and lost time.

Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. This is the simplest way to get personal income tax information, but it is only available for those requesting information about their own taxes. You can request either a tax account transcript or a tax return transcript. The return transcript only shows the tax return as it was filed and does not include any amendments or changes that were made. For more detailed information, including changes after it was filed, the tax account transcript must be requested. It takes about two weeks to get the return delivered by mail.

Fill out Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, and mail it to the IRS. The form is simple to complete and requires the same information as a phone request. In the case of a joint return with a spouse, the signature of only one spouse is necessary to request the information. Where to mail the form depends on the state where the filer lives; the addresses are available in the instructions section of the form.

For third parties seeking information about another person, complete Form 8821, Tax Information Authorization. In this form, someone else gives you permission to access his information. If the person requesting the information has been appointed to represent the taxpayer, such as a personal representative of an estate or a guardian, Form 56, Notice Concerning Fiduciary Relationship, should be filed. Any court orders or power-of-attorney documents should be included with the filing to show the IRS the validity of the fiduciary relationship.
