How to Put VMWare Onto a Flash Drive

VMWare--or more specifically, VMWare ESXi--is a program made by VMWare Inc. that allows you to load virtual environments for your applications. VMWare ESXi also allows you to "virtualize" your workplace, essentially enabling multiple computers to access applications and programs from a single server. Typically, VMWare ESXi is loaded onto an internal hard drive, but occasionally you may find yourself wanting to install it onto a USB drive instead. Fortunately, VMWare's ESXi install CD allows you to do just that.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the VMWare install disc into your computer's CD drive and reboot your computer. You should receive a prompt to press a key to boot from the CD.

    • 2

Insert your flash drive into a free USB port, then press a key to launch the VMWare install program.

    • 3

Press "Enter" at the "Welcome" screen to enter the VMWare setup.

    • 4

Press "F11" to agree to the VMWare End User License Agreement (EULA).

    • 5

Select the drive on which you wish to install VMWare in the next screen. The flash drive should show up as "Flash Reader" under the "Model" heading and "USB" under the "Type" heading.

    • 6

Press "F11" to begin the automated installation process.

    • 7

Remove the CD once the installation has finished, then reboot your computer. If you wish to launch VMWare from the flash drive, you will need to go back into the BIOS and place the USB boot option in the number one position.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not receive the prompt as outlined in Step 1, you will need to enter your computer's BIOS and change the boot order so the CD drive containing your VMWare install disc is a higher priority (see Resources).
