How to Create an IRC Chat Room
Internet Relay Chat (abbreviated IRC) has been used for decades online and remains popular even today. Users meet in public or private chat rooms (called channels) to discuss a variety of topics, and conversations can be serious in nature or casual chatter among friends. In addition to joining existing chat rooms, users can create chat rooms of their own. These can be temporary channels, used just for a single session until all the participants leave, or registered channels, managed by specific users and available for future use.

1
Download and install an IRC client compatible with your operating system. Clients are available for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and other operating systems.
-
2
Launch the installed IRC client. Familiarize yourself with the help files and quick-start resources provided with the client.
-
-
3
Choose a nickname (the screen name you will use when chatting). Your IRC client may have a default nickname preselected for you or there may be a connection dialog allowing you to pick your own unique nickname.
-
4
Connect to an IRC Network. Each network has at least one server that users can connect to and chat. Your IRC client may come with a list of existing IRC Networks and their servers.
-
5
Create a channel by typing "/join #channelname" (without quotation marks) with "channelname" being the desired name of your room. Ensure that a "#" precedes the room name. If a room by that name does not exist, the server will create a new room with that name and you will be given operator status. Use "/mode #channelname" (again, without quotation marks) to verify whether a channel by that name exists.

Tips & Warnings
To reserve a chat room for future use, be sure to create your chat room on a network with a channel registration service. Registering your channel saves it on the network and ensures only certain users will have access to operator status. Find out if a network offers channel registration by visiting the network's website or its "help" channel.
Register your nickname if the network provides nickname registration. This will ensure that others will not assume your nickname and pose as you when they enter your chat room.
Become familiar with commands associated with channel maintenance. These commands will allow you to do a number of things, including removing unwanted users from your chat room, requiring users to input a password before entering the chat room and granting operator access to users besides yourself.
