How do I Open the Gas Tank in a 1996 Jetta?

The first time you find you are running low on fuel while driving your 1996 Jetta can be panic-inducing. The 1996 Jetta gas tank requires that you unlatch a security hatch that covers your gas cap before you can fuel up. This security hatch is in place to help protect against someone siphoning gas from your Jetta's gas tank. Once the hatch is released, you may remove the gas cap to gain access to the gas tank.

Instructions

1. Press the lever marked "Gas Latch" on the driver side door of your Jetta. This will open the gas security latch.

2. Press down and twist the gas cap counterclockwise to loosen it from the gas tank.

3. Remove the gas cap to gain access to the gas tank on your 1996 Jetta.
