How to Test the LAN Connection Speed

Typically, you should be able to tell how fast your Internet connection is simply by reviewing the terms of your contract with your local broadband provider. Occasionally, however, you may find yourself wanting to know for certain--or to ensure you're not being ripped off by said broadband provider. Fortunately, it is not especially difficult to determine your connection speed.

Instructions

1. Connect your computer to either your router or your broadband modem, generally via an Ethernet cable.

2. Launch your preferred Web browser.

3. Navigate to a download speed test site, such as http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/ or http://www.speedtest.net.

4. Start the test, the process for which will differ depending on the site. If using Speedtest, click the "Begin Test" button in the center of the page. This will begin the automated testing process. At the end of the test, your connection speed will be displayed. If using Speakeasy, select the city closest to you from the choices on the left; the test will begin automatically.
