Unexplained cases of things that go bump in the night are few and far between. Here are some suggestions amateur ghost hunters (who have lots of time and money) can follow in their hapless quest to meet ghouls.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Abstain from naiveté and gullibility. Cast aside all fears, superstitions and religious beliefs that may be detrimental to your patience, serenity and objectivity.
Step2
Peruse any and all newspaper, magazine or film accounts in an exhaustive search for cases that thoroughly defy logical explanation. Check libraries, newspaper morgues, the Web and police records for instances in which heavy leaden coffins were scattered about in vaults, for example.
Step3
Try to find investigations involving persistent sightings, noises and vibrations in buildings. Be certain the commotion isn't caused by earthquakes or the ebb and flow of underground streams or sewers.
Step4
Look for hauntings that might involve a dead family member who wishes to communicate a message or warning to relatives. Seek out phenomena that could involve deceased people looking for revenge upon the living.
Step5
Rule out every possible natural cause for the disturbance, and search diligently for a pattern or timeline. Place yourself directly in the afflicted area if and when the sights or sounds are likely to recur.
Step6
Keep a written account of the activity as it takes place. Videotape, record or write down every incident, and have witnesses make corroborative recordings.
Step7
Keep an eye and ear out for intelligible sounds and sites, which may help you interpret or explain the phenomenon. Making it "an educational experience" can decrease the fear and anxiety associated with such happenings.
Step8
Contact reputable agencies and societies that are experienced in such matters quickly, before the activity ends.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that ghoul, ghost and poltergeist incidents have been reported for thousands of years and usually don't result in any harm. Don't be afraid or ashamed if you actually experience one.
  • Keep in mind that you're not alone if you never find a ghoul.
  • Help the specter lose its power over you by discreetly sharing your experiences with trusted friends, counselors or clergymen. Avoid panic and hysteria, which can be extremely damaging to your research - and downright dangerous.

on 11/22/2005 Be careful not to anger the ghost, especially if it is a poltergeist. An angered poltergeist can become very violent and dangerous.
