How to Upgrade the ThinkPad T21
Upgrading your ThinkPad T21 does not require a trip to the local computer repair center or a professional technician. An at-home solution to upgrade your computer's memory and hard disk drive is available if you are comfortable enough to use a screwdriver. Doing so will not only increase your ThinkPad's performance, but will do so in a cost-effective manner.

Install a Hard Disk Drive

Shut down your ThinkPad. Remove the AC power adapter and any external cables. Invert the unit so that the computer bottom is facing upward.

Remove the computer battery. Move the locking mechanism to an unlock position. Then, pull the battery away from the unit.

Locate the hard disk drive cover. The cover is located on the side of the computer unit. A single screw located on the bottom of the computer holds the disk drive cover in place. Remove the drive cover screw using a 2.5mm Allen wrench.

Open the LCD screen slightly. Slide the disk cover and hard disk drive out of its slot.

Push the two tabs located on either side of the drive cover to extract the hard disk drive.

Replace the drive with the component upgrade. Snap the drive cover into place and slide the disk drive into the drive bay slot. Replace the cover screw.
Upgrade the Memory Module

Ensure that your computer power is off. Remove the power adapter and any cables. Place the computer on a stable surface with the bottom facing up.

Remove the computer's battery pack. Slide the battery's locking mechanism to an unlock position and pull the battery away from the unit.

Loosen the screw to the memory slot cover, which is located near the hard disk drive cover. Remove the memory cover.

Gently pull the memory retaining clips outward. The retaining clips are located on either side of the memory module. Remove the memory module once the clips are disengaged.

Align the memory upgrade component's notched end with the memory slot socket. Insert the notched end by pressing firmly. Pivot the module downward until it snaps into place. Ensure that the piece is firmly seated. Replace and screw in the memory slot cover.

Before handling your ThinkPad's parts, touch a grounded metal object to prevent static electricity from damaging the components.
Be cautious when upgrading your computer. Accidental damage will not be covered under the manufacturer's warranty.
