How to Hook Up an Above Ground Pool Vacuum
Cleaning your above-ground pool can be quite a chore if it has to be done by hand. You can easily hook up a fully automatic above-ground pool cleaning system that is powered by your pool's filter system. Most cleaners for above-ground pools will vacuum the bottom of the pool liner, where dust and dirt accumulate. Some cleaners scoot along the bottom of the pool, while others are powered by small wheels. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Turn on your pool filter. Set the filter control to "backwash" and let it run until clean water comes out of the discharge hose. Turn the filter control back to its normal setting. Use a garden hose and fill the pool with clean water to the mark on the filter intake at the side of the pool wall, if necessary. Pull the strainer straight up from the skimmer and clean it of any leaves, hair or lint. Replace the strainer.

2
Correct any pH problems with your pool's water. Test the water by taking a sample to your pool dealer or by using a pH kit available at pool supply stores. Add the required chemicals as needed. Clean the bottom of your pool by hand of any large items such as leaves or twigs.

3
Push the leader hose section into the water intake on top of your pool vacuum until it is fully seated. Push remaining sections of vacuum hose into the leader hose, for a length equal to the point between the skimmer and the furthest point away in the pool, plus two additional sections of hose.
-
4
Assemble the cleaner head, if necessary, with your particular unit. Push the flexible rotating ring onto the bottom of the cleaner. Make sure the ring rotates freely or your cleaner will not operate correctly.
-
5
Turn off the pool filter. Pull the leader hose straight off the top of the pool vacuum. Submerge your pool vacuum into the water until it reaches the bottom. Place the hose assembly into the pool and push it under the water until all air has been forced from it. Connect the leader hose to the pool vacuum again once all bubbles have escaped from the vacuum.
-
6
Connect the opposite end of the vacuum hose to the pool skimmer using the fittings provided with the vacuum. Push the hose onto the fitting until fully seated, as leaks will create air in the system. Turn on the pool filter to activate the cleaner.

Tips & Warnings
If there are not enough vacuum hose sections to reach all areas of your pool, you might need to purchase additional sections from your pool vacuum dealer. A hose that is not long enough will not clean your pool thoroughly.
