Replacing shingles on your roof will protect your ceilings from weather damage.

Fiberglass roofing shingles, made from asphalt shingles with a fiberglass mat, hit the market in the 1970s and are used on more than 80 percent of homes today. Homeowners prefer fiberglass shingles because they have a class A fire rating, retain color well and provide good walkability. You can opt to lay and install the shingles yourself instead of hiring a professional to do it for you to save money on installation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Apply roofing felt to your roof after ensuring there is no debris on your roof that will get in your way. The felt acts as a protective mat underneath the shingles to help prevent water leakage and other weather damage.

    • 2

Measure the height of the shingles and make even measurements of this height across the bottom edge of your roof. Snap a chalk line across the roofing felt to ensure you lay the shingles in a straight line. After the first line of shingles, overlap the tiles by half a tile as is marked clearly by the adhesive on the middle of the shingle. Measure the half the height of the shingle and create another chalk line for each row of shingles.

Nail the fiberglass shingles into your roof so that the top lines up with the chalk line you made. After the first line of shingles, make sure to overlap them so that the edge of the shingle on top lands directly in the middle of the shingle on the bottom. This overlap creates protection for your roof from the weather. Nail the shingles into the roof across the middle line of the shingle.

When you reach the top ridge of your roof, trim the excess off the top layer of shingles. Staple the finishing pieces over the seam, overlapping each other.
