3
Divide vanilla frosting into four bowls, placing the majority in one bowl and only small amounts of frosting in the three remaining bowls.
-
4
Add a few drops of red food coloring to the bowl with the largest amount of frosting and mix. Repeat as necessary until the frosting is the bright red color of Elmo's fur.
-
5
Dye one of the other bowls of frosting orange and one of them black. Leave one bowl white.
-
6
Create eyes on Elmo's face with white frosting in the place where his eyes should be, referring to Elmo's picture and spreading the frosting with a spatula.
-
7
Draw his nose in the center of the cake using the orange frosting.
-
8
Create a wide, smiling mouth at the bottom of the cake with the black frosting.
-
9
Add one small circle of black frosting in the center of each eye, taking care not to smudge the white frosting underneath.
-

Fill the star-shaped piping bag with red frosting. Gently squeeze the piping bag to fill in the remaining surface of the cake with small, red stars, avoiding the areas that are already frosted with the other colors.

Tips & Warnings
The final step of this cake, filling in the remaining areas with red stars, is time-consuming, so allow yourself plenty of time to complete this step.
You can skip the piping bag and fill in the rest of the cake with red icing using a spatula for a faster finish, but this method will make it harder to avoid getting red frosting on the orange, white and black parts of the cake.
