In the pas,t a fax had to be sent from one dedicated machine to another. However, with the spread of email, dozens of services have appeared that will allow you to send a fax over a broadband DSL line. All that is required is that you have a device that can send an email with a PDF attachment. So you can use a computer, smart phone or PDA to fax with.

      Choose an email to fax service. There are dozens of services that you can choose from. Some are free, while others will charge you a monthly fee. Two free services that you can choose from are Got Free Fax and Fax Zero (see Resources). If you choose the free version, an advertisement will be inserted into your cover page. A paid service that you can use is Efax.com. It costs $15.95 per month as of August 2010.

      Insert the document that you wish to fax in a flatbed scanner. Scan it and save it as a PDF file to your desktop.

      Go to FaxZero (see Resources). Type in your name and email in the "Sender Information" section. Enter the name and fax number of the recipient in the "Receiver Information" box. Type in your message in the "Fax Information" box and enter the confirmation code. If you have a .Doc or PDF file, click on "Choose File." Click "Send free fax now." If you don't want ads on your fax, you can opt for a paid version that costs $1.99 per fax.

      Use GotFreeFax (see Resources). Type in your email address and name in the "Sender Info" box. In "Receiver Info" enter the recipient's name and fax number. Type in your message in "Fax content" box and click "Send FREE fax now!" If you have a PDF or Word document to attach to this, click on the "Upload a PDF or Doc file to Fax" button and choose a file and click "Upload."

      Register with Efax. This service will give you a special fax number and email address so you can send and receive faxes over your ADSL line without the need for a fax machine. Create an email and attach the document to it. Type in the fax number followed by the service email address in the "To" section of the email. Send the email and it will be converted to a fax.
