How to Transfer DVR Recordings to a PC

A DVR, or digital video recorder, stores video digitally on an internal memory source rather than removable cassette tapes like a VCR. This means you get clear, crisp video without having to replace the tape each times it gets filled up. You can move your videos to a permanent storage system from the DVR or just watch them on the computer using a simple converter.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the software installation disc into your computer that comes with your video conversion kit. Choose an installation destination for the software when you are prompted to and accept the terms and conditions. Wait for the software installation to complete.

    • 2

Connect one end of the USB cable to the back of the converter and the other end to your computer.

    • 3

Plug the second cable that came with the converter into the video output jack on your DVR and to the other jack on the converter. This cable is the analog cable and is able to carry video out of the DVR while keeping the image and sound intact.

    • 4

Open the converter software that you installed on your computer and leave it open while you set up the transfer.

    • 5

Choose the DVR recording you want to transfer and start playing it from the DVR controls.

    • 6

Select the record button on the open software on your computer. Let the recording run through and it will record as it plays.

Tips & Warnings

  • You don't have to know the names of the plugs; just look for an outlet that matches the head of the cable you are holding.

  • The converter records in real time so don't start the transfer unless you can leave your DVR to run for the entire length of the recording.
