How to Use Calamine for an Itch

How to Use Calamine for an Itch thumbnail
Poison ivy can cause allergic reactions and rashes in some people.

Poison ivy, oak or sumac often cause skin rashes in people who are allergic to the plants. The itchy rash that develops after contact with one of these irritants proves uncomfortable and distracting. Scratching the itchy area can serve to make the condition of your skin more irritated, so it's important to find a solution to relieve the itching. Many solutions exist to help relieve the itch, but calamine lotion is one that can soothe the itch and help dry up any blisters, according to Dr.Greene.com.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry the affected area with mild soap and water. Pat dry gently with paper towel.

    • 2

Shake the lotion well and apply a thin layer of calamine lotion to the itchy area of your skin with your fingertips.

    • 3

Reapply three to four times daily or as recommended by your health professional. Continue applying the calamine lotion, three to four times per day, for up to seven days, according to MedicineNet.com. Once the area no longer contains a rash or itches, you can stop treatment. Notify your doctor if your condition has not improved within seven days.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the expiration date on the calamine lotion's container. If it's expired, it may not be effective.

  • Calamine lotions that contain topical antihistamines, benzocaine or zirconium can make a rash worse if you have an allergic reaction to the ingredients, according to Dr.Greene.com. Avoid lotions that have these ingredients.

  • Do not apply calamine lotion to the inside of your mouth or on your eyes or genital area.
