How do I Make a Pack for a School Desk?
Teaching organizational skills to children may be a daunting task, but it's crucial for school success. School desks are often a collection of random crumpled papers, pencil shavings, books and torn folders. Help your child organize by making him a pack for his school desk. A pack simply slides onto the back of the school chair. He can keep some of his school supplies and school work in the pack. It's very easy to make a desk pack using a kitchen apron with a large front pocket.
Things You'll Need
- Apron with large front pocket
- Scissors
- Yardstick
- School chair
- Sewing pins
- Sewing machine
- Square piece of fabric, 16 x 16 inches

1
Fold the top part of the apron down. The fold should fall across the waistline of the apron.
-
2
Cut along the fold. Use the yardstick to mark a straight line before you start cutting. Do not cut off the waist ties yet. These need to remain with the bottom part of the apron to help you mark where you need to cut. After you make the cut you should have a half-apron that would tie around your waist with a large front pocket.

Turn the apron upside down and slide the back of a school chair into the front pocket of the apron, so the waist ties hang down from the bottom of the apron. This will give you a test fit. The apron will probably hang loosely on the school chair. That's fine because you are going to fix that soon. Cut off the apron waist ties.

4
Hem the cut side of the apron. Fold a 1/4 inch section of fabric over, then stitch it in place. This will prevent fraying.
-
5
Sew the waist ties back onto the chair cover. The ties should be sewn onto either side, near the top of the chair cover, where the top of the chair sits inside the pocket of the apron. This will allow you to wrap and tie a bow around the top of the chair pack to help hold it in place. The bow will be on the back of the chair near the top.

6
Create a large pocket for school supplies to fit into. Lay the square piece of fabric on top of a clean, flat surface. Use the yardstick to measure in and mark 1/4 inch all around the piece of fabric. Fold the fabric over at the marks. Attach the square to the chair cover making sure the sides of the square are folded under and pinned in placed. Sew the new pocket onto the chair cover on three sides. This pocket needs to be on the opposite side from the original apron pocket, with its open end facing in the opposite direction from the original front pocket of the apron. The original apron pocket slides over the back of the school chair to hold the pack in place, while the new pocket lays on the other side of the cover to hold school supplies.

Decorate the desk pack with iron-on appliques, glue-on jewels or puffy fabric paint. Have it embroidered with your child's name to personalize it.
