How to scan film

The HP 3800 comes with a "transparency materials adapter," or TMA, for scanning 35 mm slides and negatives. Scanning either of those requires using the built-in slide holder on the inside of the scanner cover and the HP Solution Center software. Although scanning is relatively easy, allow yourself time. Slides and negatives need to be treated carefully. Fingerprints or scratches can ruin the images.

Instructions

  1. Scanning slides

    • 1

Lift the scanner lid and locate the negative strip holder on the underside of the lid.

    • 2

Remove the negative strip holder and set it aside.

    • 3

Insert two slides into the slide holder on the underside of the lid and close the lid.

    • 4

Select "Scan Film" from the HP Solution Center software.

    • 5

In the "HP Scanning" dialog box, click on "Picture" and then select "Scan positives, including 35 mm slides, using the TMA."

    • 6

      Click "Scan."

    Scanning Negatives

    • 7

Carefully slip the negative into the negative holder. If there is space left over, use the blank to fill the gap.

    • 8

Insert the negative holder back into the slide holder and close the lid.

    • 9

Click "Scan Film" in the HP Solution Center software.

    • 10

In the "HP Scanning" dialog box click on "Picture" and then select "Scan negatives using the TMA."

    • 11

      Click "Scan."

Tips & Warnings

  • Always hold slides and negatives by their edges.
