How Do I Cook with a Rib Rack?

A rib rack allows you to bake, roast or barbecue ribs in the standing position. This helps fat drain from the ribs, which means that the meat cooks with less fat and the ribs are separated for serving. Rib racks are available in most places where barbecue supplies are sold or online through various retailers. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Beef or pork ribs
  • Meat saw

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the ribs into sections that will fit the rack with very little overhang. Use a meat saw to cut through thick bone.

    • 2

Season the ribs as desired, using barbecue rub or salt and pepper.

    • 3

Position each rib section in its own part of the rack. Place the rack in a large roasting pan if you are cooking the ribs in the oven.

    • 4

Pre-heat the grill or the oven to moderate heat. For oven cooking, 325 degrees Fahrenheit is sufficient. Use a grill thermometer to reach a similar temperature on the grill.

    • 5

Cook the ribs, either in the oven or on the grill, until done. Use a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest portion of the ribs to determine when the meat is done. Pork ribs should be a minimum of 170 degrees; beef ribs should reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees.

    • 6

Brush the ribs with barbecue sauce. Do this every 20 to 30 minutes during the entire cooking process, if desired. Reserve enough sauce to thoroughly baste the ribs at the end of the cooking process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Brush the rib rack with olive oil or use a nonstick spray to ensure that the ribs do not stick to the rack during cooking.

  • Rib racks allow you to cook the ribs without having to turn them, whether you do them in the oven or on the grill.
