How Do I Shut Off the Car Alarm in a 1996 VW Jetta?
All trim levels of the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta came equipped with an anti-theft alarm system. This is an active alarm as opposed to the alternate passive option and is set by pushing the lock button on the key fob or locking the driver's side door with the key. The alarm is tripped when the vehicle's anti-theft control module senses an unauthorized entry attempt, sensed by a change in voltage. For example, if someone opens the door to your car, the alarm will sound. The alarm is not set off by motion, such as a breaking window. It is very easy to shut off.

1
Locate the "Lock" button on your key fob, which is at the bottom and has a picture of a lock on it. Press the button twice.
-
2
Approach your car if the alarm does not deactivate from far away. If you have not replaced your battery in some time, the distance to activate and deactivate your alarm will be limited. Replace your battery, as soon as possible, to prevent having to go to your car every time the alarm sounds.

3
Insert your key in the driver's side door and turn it to the right to unlock it if the key fob does not work. This also shuts off the alarm.

Tips & Warnings
If your alarm goes off randomly, take your Jetta to a mechanic--this signifies an electrical problem.
