How do I Boot a Vaio From a CD?

If your Sony Vaio laptop has crashed, booting it from a CD, such as a Windows installation disk, may be the only way to get it working again. Sony Vaio laptops show a graphical boot screen by default, whereas many computers show a text screen with information about the boot process. To boot from a CD, place the CD-ROM drive in a higher position than the hard drive on the computer's boot sequence; Viao laptops have the option of lowering in the boot sequence by default. To change the option, access it from the computer's BIOS menu.

Things You'll Need

  • Bootable CD (such a Windows installation disk)

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the installation CD into the laptop's CD/DVD drive.

    • 2

      Restart the Vaio laptop.

    • 3

Hold down the "F2" key while the computer begins to reboot. This brings you to the BIOS menu. Depending on your model, it may be the "F1" or the "F3" key.

    • 4

Go to the "Boot options" section.

    • 5

Highlight the CD-ROM drive and move it to the top of the boot options list. The commands vary between different versions of the BIOS, but the key functions are listed at the bottom of the screen.

    • 6

Go to the "Exit" section and select "Save Changes and Restart." When the computer restarts, it should boot from the CD in your drive.
