How to Knit a Half Round or Round Rug

How to Knit a Half Round or Round Rug thumbnail
Natural fiber yarns, such as cotton and linen, absorb water well, making them ideal choices for bathroom rugs.

Few home décor items can equal the handmade comfort of a knitted rug. For DIY crafters, this comfort is accentuated by the pride of making something yourself to decorate your home. Instead of a traditional square rug, however, why not make a rug in a circular or semi-circular shape? These rugs are an excellent project for practicing short-row knitting techniques. Knitted out of chunky yarn in garter stitch, they work up quickly. Knit several in different colors, for interchangeable décor options.

    • 13

Row 22: bind off all stitches to finish wedge shape.

    • 14

Knit 5 total wedges for the half round rug, and 10 total wedges for the round rug.

    • 15

Seam all wedges together along the long edges, matching the center points of the wedges, to create either the semi-circle or full circle shape.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a nicely finished or decorative edge, consider picking up stitches and crocheting an edging, such as a picot edge, along the outside of the rug.

  • To create a whimsical pinwheel look, knit wedges out of various colors.

  • Use a nonskid pad under your rug to prevent slippage and potential injury.
