VoIP technology channels calls over the Internet.

"VoIP" means "Voice over Internet Protocol". A VoIP service comes in a number of formats. These range from a telephone adapter which works with your existing telephone to computer based software. The steps you will need to follow in order to use VoIP vary depending on the format you require.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a format for your service. The options are: a telephone adapter working with your current telephone; a router and digital handset supplied by a service provider; a subscription service which works with your computer and a broadband Internet connection.

The equipment you will need depends on the service you choose. With the first two options, the service provider will send you the required equipment. You plug this into your telephone socket and your VoIP service is operational. With option three you will need to take additional steps.

    • 2

Ensure that the equipment you have is sufficient for a reliable VoIP service. Your computer should comply with the hardware requirements specified by your service provider. Do not rely on the built-in microphone and speaker of your computer. Buy a telephone handset that can plug into the USB port of your computer, or a headset with earphone and microphone.

Subscribe to a broadband Internet service provider (ISP). The service you choose should provide sufficient bandwidth to comply with your chosen VoIP provider's system requirements. The upload rate of your Internet access is the most important factor. This should be higher than 30 kbps (kilobits per second) for a low quality service or 90 kbps for a high quality line. Once the broadband service is operational, check that you are being provided with the promised bandwidth. Your chosen VoIP service provider will have a bandwidth tester on its website. Alternatively, use the VoIP bandwidth tester at Bandwidth.com.

Check that the firewall software you are running on your computer is compatible with VoIP. It may be necessary to upgrade your firewall to allow VoIP traffic through.

Tips & Warnings

  • Service providers offer different packages. Low quality is cheaper and requires less bandwidth. A low-quality service is more susceptible to dropped calls caused by packet loss. A high quality service is more expensive, but will offer a more reliable service with clearer sound quality. Check that your service provider uses echo cancellation. Echo can ruin the caller's experience and can only be dealt with at the server.
