Enroll in a technical college or vocational school that offers a travel agent certification program. Four-year universities also offer certification as part of a hospitality and tourism management degree. Complete courses in geography, business management and computer programs (specific to the travel industry) and file your certification paperwork.

Apply for a job at a travel agency. During school you may wish to apply for an entry-level or assistant position at an agency. Upon certification you can then apply for promotions or higher-level positions at agencies. You must be a registered travel agent to use discounts.

Join the American Society of Travel Agents. This organization holds conferences and workshops related to the industry. You can also obtain special discounts as an active member. There is a yearly fee you must pay to join.
