Thoughtful planning is key to a successful conversion. Plan the mechanical systems. Locate plumbing close to existing pipes and sewer drains to minimize the need to jack-hammer up large sections of concrete floor to run pipes. Determine whether existing electrical components meet regulations for interior electrical. Also plan for heating and cooling vents and intakes.

Leaving the garage doors in place can create a seamless appearance. Lay out the location of interior walls and place doorways on the floor plan. Consider leaving the garage doors in place and framing just inside of them so the exterior appearance of the home remains unchanged.

Follow your plan closely when installing mechanical systems. Mark where the plumbing will be routed, and cut out the concrete in the flooring as needed to run pipes. Frame the walls and door openings, run electrical wiring and install lighting fixtures. Insulate between the studs, and hang the sheetrock, then tape, texture and paint the walls.

An additional bathroom can enhance a home dramatically. Install the tub or shower stall, and seat the toilet. Install the vanity or pedestal sink, and hook up the plumbing. Hang your mirrors or medicine cabinets and towel bars.
