With the amount of damage done to hair on a daily basis--coloring, exposure to the sun and chemical relaxing--it is no surprise that hair can become completely stripped and refuse to hold hair color. Hair that will not hold color often feels similar to corn silk--the thin, springy strings found on the inside of corncobs--when wet. Extremely damaged hair dries rough and frizzy. There are several solutions to repairing hair that will not hold color anymore.

Do not wash your hair for a couple of days. Rinse your hair with cool water in the shower and apply a deep conditioning treatment. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse your hair clean. Squeeze the water out of your hair with a towel. Do not rub your hair dry.

Wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo that does not contain sulfates. Sodium lauryl sulfates are known to leave deposits in the hair, possibly causing damage to the follicle. Use an all-natural shampoo formulated to repair damaged hair.

Pour a small amount of olive oil into a bowl and microwave it for about 30 seconds. Remove the bowl and allow the oil to cool until it is comfortable to touch. Wet your hair and apply the oil all over your strands, focusing on the ends. Leave the oil in for about an hour. Then rinse and wash with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

Mix together a heaping spoonful of mayonnaise and one whole avocado. This mixture can be applied to dry or wet hair. Focus on the ends of your hair. Wrap your hair in plastic wrap, allow the mixture to sit for approximately 15 minutes, then rinse clean. Wash and condition with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

Visit a salon and request a deep conditioning treatment. Be sure the stylist cuts away the damaged split ends of your hair before the treatment; these cannot be repaired by conditioning.

Tip

A store-bought hot oil treatment can be used in place of heating olive oil.

Warning

Olive oil is very hot when it is removed from the microwave. Use caution.
