How to Mount a Bicycle Speedometer Speed Sensor

A bicycle speedometer/computer is an excellent way to read your mileage, speed, cadence and even heart rate. Such information makes your workout simpler and easier to track, and provides bragging rights when you tell your friends about that "million mile ride" you suffered through last weekend. Unfortunately, the instructions that come with most cycling computers are all but impossible to understand, making installing the computer more work than was anticipated. Learn how to install the speed sensor for your bike computer so you can get out on the road tracking miles.

Instructions

Set your bicycle on its kickstand or upside down on its handlebars and seat. If you have a dedicated bicycle work stand, clamp the bike in the stand securely with the front wheel off the ground.

    • 2

Remove the bike computer from its packaging a verify that all the parts are there. You should have a computer face and mounting bracket, a speed sensor, a small spoke magnet and four or more zip ties. If your computer is not wireless, the speed sensor and computer face bracket will be connected with a long electric cable.

    • 3

Attach the speed sensor to the front of the right fork leg of the bicycle using two of the zip ties provided. There should be a small marking on the sensor indicating where the magnet should pass next to it. Be sure this marking faces the wheel of the bicycle. Make certain that the sensor doesn't rattle or slide on the fork leg.

    • 4

Wrap the cable attached to the speed sensor around the top of the right fork leg of the bicycle once. Use a zip tie to secure the cable to the bottom of the front brake cable. This will keep the cable from coming unwound and getting tangled in the spokes of the wheel. Wrap the cable around the front brake cable several times until you can rest the computer face bracket on top of the handlebars without tugging at the cable.

    • 5

Attach the computer face bracket to the handlebars with the remaining zip tie. If your computer came with a dedicated handlebar mount, attach it to the face and secure it to the handlebars with a Phillips screwdriver. Be sure the bracket doesn't twist around the bars unnecessarily.

    • 6

Attach the speed sensor magnet to a spoke on the wheel. Loosen the plastic backing of the magnet by twisting it counterclockwise. Place the magnet and backing around a spoke. Tighten the backing by twisting it clockwise. Make certain the magnet lines up with the magnet sensor marking on the speed sensor. Slide the computer face into the computer face bracket. Take your bike out for a test ride. Watch the computer for information on your speed and distance.
