How do I Configure the DMZ for a Linksys BitTorrent? thumbnail
You can configure the DMZ on a Linksys router.

BitTorrent is a client application that allows you to download torrent peer-to-peer files on the Internet. If your computer is behind a Linksys router, however, you may not be able to connect to other users on the client properly. Configuring your router to allow your computer to use the Demilitarized Zone "DMZ" will open that computer to incoming connections without limitations.

Instructions

  1. Find Your Computer's Network IP Address

    • 1

Click the "Start" button to launch the start menu.

    • 2

Click "Run" if you are using Windows XP. Windows Vista and Windows 7 users can use the text box supplied in the start menu.

    • 3

Type "cmd" in the text box and press the "Enter" key on the keyboard to launch a command prompt.

    • 4

Type "ipconfig" into the command prompt and press the "Enter" key. You should see information about your computer's IP in the command prompt screen.

    • 5

Record your computer's network IP address. It should look similar to "192.168.1.xx" where the "xx" is a random network number.

    Configure Linksys DMZ

    • 6

Open an Internet browser and type "192.168.1.1" in the browser's address bar. This is the default IP address used by Linksys routers. As long as you have not changed this setting, it should launch an administrator login panel.

    • 7

Type the Linksys administrator name and password at the prompt. The default administrator account name is "admin" with "admin" as the password.

    • 8

Navigate to the "Applications and Gaming" tab, then choose the "DMZ" option.

    • 9

Choose "Enable" from the drop-down menu next to "DMZ."

    • 10

Type the last digits of the computer's network IP address that you recorded earlier in the text box next to "192.168.1."

    • 11

Click "Save Settings" and allow the router to reset itself. Your computer should now have DMZ access, allowing connections through the router.

Tips & Warnings

  • Opening your computer ports using DMZ access may cause security issues for your computer. If you choose to use DMZ for downloading from BitTorrent, you may wish to disable it once your downloads are complete.
