When installing DSL, you may need to manually set up your connection.

When you first install a DSL connection at your home, you need your computer to recognize the new connection. Usually your computer will recognize a new broadband connection automatically but if not, you may have to manually fix the problem.

Instructions

  1. How to manually set up DSL

    • 1

Run the setup CD for your connection if given to you by your provider. If you do not have a CD, begin at Step 2.

    • 2

Check all your wire connections. This includes the DSL wire connecting your modem to the phone jack and the Ethernet cable connecting your computer to your modem.

    • 3

Turn on your modem and log in by typing "192.168.1.1" in your address bar. The default username and password is usually "admin." If "192.168.1.1" does not work, contact your service provider and ask them how to log in to your modem.

    • 4

Set up a new connection once you have logged in to your modem. You will need the username and password provided to you by your Internet service provider. Choose the new connection you have created to be automatically used.

    • 5

Go to "Control Panel" and check to see if a Local Area Network is found by your computer. If it is still not showing up, you may need to call your service provider and check for a faulty DSL wire outside your home.
