How Do I Check for a North Carolina State Tax Refund?

North Carolina imposes a state income tax on money earned within the state. If you have too much money withheld for North Carolina income taxes, you'll receive a refund when you file your income tax return. The North Carolina Department of Revenue allows you to check the status of your refund either online or over the phone.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your tax records to determine the exact amount of your North Carolina tax refund. You can find this on Line 31 of Form D-400.

    • 2

Go to the North Carolina Department of Revenue's website to check the status of your refund (see Resources).

    • 3

Select the option to check the status of your refund in the center of the screen. The option to check the status of your income tax refund will be the first option; click "Next." On the following page, enter your refund amount and your Social Security number. The website will display the status of your refund.

Call the North Carolina Department of Revenue at 1-877-252-4052 to check the status of your refund if you prefer not to inquire online. The same information will be required to receive the status of your refund.
