Passports are required documents for international travel for all United States citizens. The application process for a passport is the same in each state; you have to fill out an application, visit your local Passport Acceptance Facility, submit the appropriate documentation and pay for your passport. Once you’ve done this, your passport application is mailed to the U.S. Department of State and your passport is processed. Provided you’ve submitted all of the appropriate documentation and your application is complete, your new passport will arrive six to eight weeks later.

Apply for a passport in Oregon by filling out form DS-11, the application for a U.S. Passport. Include all of the requested information. Incomplete applications are automatically denied by the U.S. Department of State.

Obtain documentation to prove your U.S. citizenship and identity. The U.S. Department of State accepts birth certificates, naturalization certificates, certificates of citizenship and consular reports of birth abroad as proof of U.S. citizenship and driver’s licenses, military IDs, government IDs and naturalization certificates as proof of identity.

Take two passport photos. Passport Acceptance Facilities in Oregon are equipped to take photos for you that meet all of the guidelines for acceptance. The U.S. Department of State does not accept passport photos that are not 2 inches by 2 inches, in color, of only your face on a white background, wearing regular clothing and no uniforms, hats or glasses not prescribed by your optometrist.

Take your application, proof of citizenship, proof of identity and photos to your nearest Oregon Passport Acceptance Facility. Pay the passport fees, which are $135 as of 2011. Acceptable methods of payment differ at each Passport Facility location. Your passport will arrive in your mailbox six to eight weeks after you submit your application. If you require your passport more quickly, you can expedite the process for an addition $60, which ensures your passport will arrive within two to three weeks.
