How to Use External Hard Drive for Xbox 360

An external hard drive can be used with an Xbox 360 console to backup media files and games. Even though Microsoft offers an external hard drive for its system, an external hard drive will provide you with additional storage space when you need to save your games. A USB adapter is necessary to plug the external hard drive into the Xbox 360 console.

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox transfer kit
  • USB hard drive

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the Xbox 360 console off and remove accessories from the system.

    • 2

Plug the male end of the USB transfer cable into the USB port on the back of the Xbox 360 console. Don't use the USB port on the front of the console.

    • 3

Plug the other end of the Xbox 360 transfer cable into the male end of your USB external hard drive.

    • 4

Turn the Xbox 360 on and open the DVD drive on the console. Put the transfer kit's DVD into the drive and follow the prompts on the screen to transfer your data.
