How do I Get a Visa or Mastercard Credit Card With No Credit?

Credit cards are easier and safer than cash, and you can get one with no credit record.

Credit cards have become a way of life for most of us, but if you've just moved to the U.S or you're new to credit (maybe a student) then getting a credit card might appear to be challenging. Don't despair; even with no previous credit record you can get a Visa or MasterCard credit card. Follow some moderately easy guidelines and you could have a credit card in a couple of weeks. Apply online using the MasterCard or Visa card websites. It's the simplest way to get a credit card with no credit record, and some card issuers give you an instant decision.

Instructions

Get a Visa Credit Card

1. Go to the Visa website to get a credit card with no credit record (see Resources). Click "Get Help Choosing" and then click "Start Your Search" followed by "Let's Get Started."

2. Check the appropriate two boxes about your bank and credit history. Click "Tell us about your habits and Preferences". Answer the questions by checking the boxes then click "Finally a few questions about how you live." Check the boxes then click "Now let's see your results". This completes the first phase of getting a Visa credit card with no credit record.

3. Click each of the cards offered to learn about their benefits. The Visa credit cards listed are available with no credit record. One will indicate that it's the best fit, based upon the boxes you checked previously.

4. Click on your selected card then read the full details. If you click your back browser button you will have to start over. Click "Apply Now." You'll get a list of card issuers. Select one and a new window opens for the card issuers secure website.Follow the online instructions to apply for your Visa credit card (each card issuer has different instructions but all are simple to follow).

5. Complete the application from carefully. Submit your application then review the details. Confirm you want to apply. Your ID and credit record will be checked. Some card issuers will give you an instant decision, others will mail you. If successful you will get your credit card in a couple of weeks.

Get a MasterCard Credit Card

1. Go to the MasterCard website (see Resources) to get a credit card with no credit record. Click one of the four options about the type of card you want. This will start the process of selecting a MasterCard with no credit history.

2. Check the box "No" then check the box "I am new to credit." Click "Submit" and you will get a selection of MasterCard's you can apply for with no credit record.

3. Read the features of each card. Expand the information by clicking "more info'." Select the MasterCard you want and click "Apply Now." A new window opens for your chosen card issuers website.

4. Read the details and click "Apply Now". Complete your personal information. Read the terms and conditions and click "Continue" or similar.

5. Review your application carefully. Ensure the details are correct. Click "Continue." Follow the simple subsequent instructions and submit your application for verification and ID check. Wait for a response. Some card issuers will give you a decision online, and others will contact you via mail. Once your application has been accepted expect your new MasterCard to arrive in a week or so.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are declined, refrain from applying to other card issuers for a couple of months. Multiple applications over a short period damage any credit record you are trying to build. There are also options through your bank for a secured credit card.
