How to Find an Ex to File for Divorce in Canada
Divorce is never an easy situation; however, it can be much more difficult if the spouse wishing a divorce has to find the other "ex" spouse still legally tied to him or her. People disappear for a variety of reasons, and often work hard to make themselves scarce. If you are seeking a divorce in Canada from an "ex" who has disappeared, there are numerous methods available to you to find the missing party to officially serve the divorce papers.

1
Try to contact your ex at his last known address, even if you have tried before and not received a response. It is possible that previous mail or calls were simply not received or ignored, and the party is still in residence there.
-
2
Ask neighbors at this location if they can verify whether the ex is still residing at this last known address. Take a picture with you--as recent as possible--in case your ex has changed his hair color, facial hair or body weight.

3
Call friends and relatives of your ex to see if they can verify a correct address for the missing party. It may help to explain that you are simply filing divorce papers and would like the absent spouse to be given a chance to sign the papers and speak in court.
-
4
Post an advertisement in newspapers where the missing ex was last known to live, looking for friends or family who might be able to give you a correct address. Additionally, you can try other websites, such as Craigslist.com or Facebook.com to attempt to find the ex, or those who know the ex and can advise her that you are seeking a divorce.
-
5
Request a copy of your spouse's tax return, as well as your own. If she worked the previous year, a tax return with the correct address--or the most recent one--should be on file with the Canadian Revenue Agency. Contact them at 800-959-8281 to request the appropriate tax form copy.
-
6
Hire an independent, private investigator to find the missing ex. The investigator will need a photo, Social Security number, last known address and/or employer, and any friend or family contacts that could possibly assist in the investigation.

Tips & Warnings
In cases where a spouse simply cannot be found, it can be requested that the judge remove the requirement for serving the missing spouse to grant the divorce.
A divorce judge in Canada is going to require that the spouse seeking a divorce has made every attempt to locate the missing spouse before a divorce is granted.
